"Department of Biopharmaceutics and Drug Metabolism" is a new Department established in 1997 as a result of comprehensive reorganization of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Kyoto University.

Outline of Teaching Activities
Lectures on basic biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics are provided by the Department for undergraduate students. Advanced in vivo and in vitro experimental methods and techniques and theories for mechanistic studies on drug disposition in the body are provided for graduate students. The Department also provides students with seminars, in which recent topics and advances in biopharmaceutical studies are reviewed and discussed based on the literature with particular emphasis on drug disposition.

Outline of Research Activities
To realize ideal drug therapy by optimizing drug design and delivery, we are focusing on the studies on the drug-body interaction based on the scientific background of biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics and drug delivery system. Our current research projects are listed below.

1) Elucidation of the physiological functions of extracellular vesicles.
2) Development of extracellular vesicle-based therapy.
3) Development of drug delivery systems using biomaterials.
