For those interested in joining our laboratory. Please read the conditions below before contacting us.
Before you contact us
Our lab has many members, and almost all lab education takes place in Japanese: seminars, data discussions, and day-to-day training at the bench. For this reason, student applicants are required to speak Japanese fluently.
Undergraduate and Master's positions are open only to students of Kyoto University. Applicants from outside the university are considered for doctoral and postdoctoral positions only, and the following three points apply to them:
- Own funding. Applicants are strongly encouraged to bring their own fellowship or scholarship. We do not have positions funded by the lab for applicants from outside the university.
- A recommendation from a researcher who knows our work. We give priority to candidates introduced by our collaborators or by researchers familiar with our research. An inquiry sent only with a CV, without such an introduction, is unlikely to lead to a position.
- Research fit. Our work is on the molecular mechanisms of GPCR signal transduction. We are not able to host projects in other fields such as drug delivery, formulation, natural product pharmacology, or clinical research. Please check our Research page before writing to us.
Positions

Undergraduate students (Kyoto University only)
Fourth-year students of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyoto University, can be assigned to our lab through the regular assignment process. If you are interested, please take the Introductory Seminar for Specialized Research in your third year, or contact us to arrange a lab visit. We do not accept undergraduate students from other universities.

Master's students (Kyoto University only)
We accept Master's students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyoto University, through the regular entrance examination. If you are a Kyoto University student and wish to join our lab, please contact us to arrange a lab visit and an interview before you apply. We do not accept Master's applicants from other universities, and we do not issue letters of acceptance or supervision for scholarship applications.

Doctoral students
Doctoral students are expected to plan and carry out their research on their own, with discussion and advice from the lab rather than step-by-step instruction. Applicants from outside Kyoto University are considered when they
- speak Japanese fluently
- have the ability to conduct research independently, demonstrated by a Master's thesis or first-author publication in a related field
- have a research background that matches our field (GPCR signaling, receptor pharmacology, or related molecular cell biology)
- have a recommendation from a researcher who knows our work, preferably one of our collaborators
- and, preferably, hold or are eligible for their own scholarship
If these conditions are met, we will arrange an interview and share details of our research and the laboratory environment.

Postdoctoral researchers
We do not have open postdoctoral positions funded by the lab. We consider hosting a postdoctoral researcher who
- holds, or is applying for, his or her own fellowship (for example, JSPS, HFSP, or a fellowship from the candidate's home country), and
- is recommended by a researcher who knows our work.
Candidates who meet these conditions are welcome to contact us well before the fellowship deadline so that we can discuss a research plan.
Visiting students and short-term research stays
Hosting a visiting student or short-term researcher takes a large amount of time from our lab members. We therefore accept visiting stays (including those funded by external programs such as the JSPS Summer Program) only when the applicant’s laboratory has an ongoing collaboration with us, or when a future collaboration between the two laboratories is likely. If you are interested in a visiting stay, please discuss this point with your supervisor first; we expect the initial contact to come from your supervisor rather than from you.
Research environment

Equipment and facilities
The lab is equipped for quantitative cell-based signaling assays, imaging, and protein engineering, and has good access to shared facilities at Kyoto University and to external research institutions.

International collaboration
We collaborate with many laboratories overseas, and lab members regularly present at international meetings. We support English paper writing and presentation skills, although daily training is in Japanese.

We help members with scholarship recommendations, fellowship applications, and career planning once they have joined the lab.

- a CV and a short description of your research background, including your Master's thesis or publications
- for doctoral applicants, your level of Japanese (for example, JLPT level, or study or work experience in Japanese)
- the name of the researcher who recommends you (or ask them to write to us directly)
- information on your funding or the fellowship you plan to apply for
We will share details of our research and laboratory atmosphere with selected applicants. We may not be able to reply to inquiries that do not meet the conditions above.
