QIs the TOEFL exam required?

AYes. In order to qualify to apply for the Special Selection for Privately Financed Undergraduate International Students, applicants must take the TOEFL exam and submit their Examinee Score Record (copy). Applicants must also request the testing agency (ETS) for submitting the Official Score Report directly to Kyoto University.


QIs the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) required?

AYes. In order to qualify to apply for the Special Selection for Privately Financed Undergraduate International Students, applicants must take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and submit their score certificate. The examination subjects are Japanese as a Foreign Language, two science subjects (free elective) and mathematics (Course 2). The language used for science and mathematics examination shall be Japanese.


QWhat scholarships are available?

AThe application process for scholarships varies. Some applications must be made through the applicant’s university while some can be made directly by the individual to foundations.

In principle, only those who hold the residence status of “College Student” (Ryugaku) are eligible to apply for scholarships. Applications for scholarships can only be accepted after enrollment. Please ensure that you have sufficient financial resources prior to entering Kyoto University.


QWhat accommodation facilities (dormitories) are available?

AIn addition to the Japanese public medical insurance program (National Health Insurance), there are Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research, Student Mutual Benefit/Life Mutual Insurance, Comprehensive Renters Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan, etc. Please go here [LINK] for more information. International students who intend to stay in Japan for one year or longer are required to enroll in the Japanese public medical insurance program. There is a system for privately financed international students to apply for a subsidy for National Health Insurance fees.
